WHAT IS HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION (HIV)?
HIV infection is a viral infection allegedly caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a virus that allegedly destroys the immune system. More than 800,000 people in the USA are thought to be infected with HIV, and 40,000 new HIV infections occur in the USA each year. 4.9 million new HIV infections occurred in 2004. Approximately 11 of every 1,000 adults (ages 15 to 49) are HIV infected.
WHAT IS AIDS (ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME)?
AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is allegedly the final and most serious stage of HIV disease. AIDS includes all HIV-infected people who have fewer than 200 CD4+ T cells per cubic millimeter of blood. (Healthy adults usually have CD4+ T-cell counts of 1,000 or more.) People with AIDS are also particularly prone to developing various cancers, especially those caused by viruses such as Kaposi's sarcoma and cervical cancer, or cancers of the immune system known as lymphomas. These cancers are usually more aggressive. Signs of Kaposi's sarcoma in light-skinned people are round brown, reddish, or purple spots that develop in the skin or in the mouth. In dark-skinned people, the spots are more pigmented. During the course of HIV infection, most people experience a gradual decline in the number of CD4+ T cells, although some may have abrupt and dramatic drops in their CD4+ T-cell counts. AIDS was first reported in the USA in 1981 and has since become a major worldwide epidemic. 3.1 million people lost their lives from AIDS in 2004. 39.4 million people around the world are living with AIDS/HIV in 2004. 25 million children will be orphans by 2010 because of AIDS Over 27 million people have died since the first AIDS case was identified in 1980. The AIDS epidemic is growing most rapidly among minority populations and is a leading killer of African-American males ages 25 to 44. AIDS effects nearly seven times more African Americans and three times more Hispanics than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African-American women and children are being effected by HIV/AIDS. In 2003, two-thirds of USA AIDS cases in both women and children were among African-Americans.
SYMPTOMS OF HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION (HIV)
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) allegedly progresses in stages. These alleged stages are based on your symptoms and the amount of the virus in your blood. Initial stage: Flu like symptoms often appear within 3 to 6 weeks of initial exposure to the virus, although symptoms can develop within just a few days. This first stage is called acute retroviral syndrome. Symptoms of acute retroviral syndrome are often mistaken for symptoms of another viral infection, such as influenza or mononucleosis, and may include: abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpits and groin, fever, headache, muscle aches and joint pain, skin rash, sore throat and weight loss.
EXAMINATIONS & TESTS FOR HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION (HIV)
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is diagnosed when antibodies to HIV are detected in the blood. The two primary blood tests used to detect the HIV antibodies are: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Western blot assay, used to confirm the results of a positive ELISA test. HIV is diagnosed only after two or more positive ELISA tests are confirmed by a positive Western blot assay. It can take up to 6 months from the time you become infected with HIV for the antibodies to be detected in your blood. This is commonly called the "window period," or seroconversion period.
